I recently started volunteering at the Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA) in Pioneer Square in Seattle. Here is a photo from the First Thursday Art Walk. Pictured here is me (right) and artist Desearch Repartment (left). Check out their stuff at www.desearchrepartment.com/. Current, thought-provoking work. The show will be up until the end of the month. As our president is doing in the photo above, I would give the show two thumbs up.

Center on Contemporary Art and 1-World Globes & Maps announce Top Winners of Re-Imagine The Map of the World Contest
Seattle, April 22, 2017 – Seattle’s Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA) in collaboration with 1-World Globes & Maps (1-World) are pleased to announce the winners of the 2017 Re-Imagine The Map of the World contest. Artists were invited to create original works of art depicting the world map, re-envisioned in light of changing physical and political landscapes. This year’s juror and CoCA Curator, Joseph C. Roberts, selected the top three artists.
Residing from Seattle, WA, the First Place winner of the competition is Stephen Rock. Rock will receive a $500 prize and a full-size giclée print on archival paper. Additionally, a reproduction of the artwork will be available for sale world-wide through 1-World Globes & Maps' online stores. The artist will be given a 20% royalty on all art-maps sold that depict his work.
Larry and Debby Kline are a collaborative team from Escondido, California and the Second Place winners. They will receive a $250 prize plus a full-size giclée print on archival paper.
The Third Place winner is Brita Ness also from Seattle who will receive a $100 prize and a full-size giclée print on archival paper.
All of the chosen art-maps will be shared on CoCA’s and 1-World Globes & Maps' website and on social media starting Earth Day, April 22, 2017. Selected art-maps will soon be available for sale on 1-World Globes & Maps' online store at www.worldmapsonline.com.
CoCA serves the Pacific Northwest as a catalyst and forum for the advancement, development, and understanding of Contemporary Art.

Last month, my dad and I traveled to Mexico where we rented a car and managed to find our way around the Yucatan Peninsula. It was an interesting and beautiful place to explore. The photo above was taken at Cenote Dos Ojos. Click here to see some of my favorite photos from our trip.

Despite feeling a bit of a creative lull lately, I've been trying to keep working on smaller projects and take more photographs. I find that photography is a wonderful way to enhance observation and to notice and appreciate everyday things. Finding new ways to abstract subjects is of particular interest to me because it is in direct opposition to photography's tendency to capture what exists in an exact, literal, and indexical way.

Lately I've been working with Global HELP Organization's Dr. Lynn Staheli on some basic illustrations for a compact pediatric orthopedic textbook. This project has been enjoyable and interesting, and it is a pleasure to work with Dr. Staheli.

Just returned from an amazing two weeks in L.A.! Southern California is very different from Seattle, but I had a great time visiting art galleries and museums, swimming in the surf, and exploring the city. The Matthew Barney exhibit at MoCA and the new Broad museum were a couple of the highlights for me.
Here is a link to the MoCA site for the Matthew Barney exhibition.
